Regenerativ Business Frameworks in the Arts

Regenerative Business Frameworks in the Arts is a Nordic development project working to develop an applied framework for regenerative business models in the performing arts sector. The framework is intended for internationally touring artists and companies seeking to strengthen and expand their artistic practices.

At a time when economic conditions and funding structures are shifting, it is increasingly important to support artists, arts workers and organisations in adopting regenerative mindsets and methods. The project is led by ReArtica (NO) and Wildtopia (DK).

Key question

How can we diversify income streams in the performing arts sector without exhausting the people and organisations involved?

Background and approach

The performing arts operate within a constantly changing social and cultural landscape. The field faces economic pressures, increasing demands for sustainability and evolving expectations from audiences. At the same time, organisations must maintain energy, creativity and resilience while continuing to develop their work and ensuring that the arts remain a vital part of society.

The project explores how the performing arts sector can move from linear and extractive production models towards more regenerative, circular and relationship-based ecosystems. While sustainability is often discussed at a conceptual level, this project focuses on making regenerative approaches more operational and applicable within everyday artistic and organisational practice.

Through workshops, dialogue formats, interviews and artistic as well as organisational case studies, the project develops a practical framework and a set of tools that can support artists, producers and institutions in working more long-term, sustainably and resiliently. Particular attention is given to the interplay between artistic practice, economics, organisation and touring.

The project combines practice-based research, dramaturgical and systemic analysis, and perspectives from regenerative entrepreneurship. External contributors from fields such as regenerative business development, organisational psychology, sustainable production and alternative financing participate through expert inputs and sparring sessions.

Organisation of collaboration

The project is led by ReArtica (NO) and Wildtopia (DK). Farnham Maltings (UK) participates as distribution partner.

Four artist case partners form the core testing ground of the project, each applying regenerative principles within their own artistic and organisational contexts in order to generate concrete and transferable learning.

The project is selected and supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, Arts Council Norway, and Arts Council England through the International Touring and Environmental Responsibility (ITER) programme. ITER is initiated and funded by Arts Council England, the Danish Arts Foundation and Arts Council Norway, and delivered by Julie’s Bicyclein collaboration with In Futurum (DK).
